Lux Mediation Founder, Jonathan Lux, attended the 9th edition of the Shipping & the Law programme in Naples, Italy. Jonathan was one of the many high-profile names and speakers that appeared at the event on the 15th and 16th of October, 2018.
The topics discussed included the environment, fuel and technologies as well as national barriers for both people and goods within the future of the maritime industry. The event itself was aptly titled: The Future is Now.
This highly sought after event, with over 200 attendees, was the perfect opportunity for many different experts to network with each other and discuss the future of shipping. Some of the attendees included experts from a wide range of maritime backgrounds, including both shipowners and political figures.
Shipping and the Law has been around for the past eight years and has now become an annual event for Italy and Europe’s maritime experts.
Jonathan’s talk focused:
largely on early resolution and mediation.
He examined issues relating to when and why you should use mediation and how this differs from arbitration.
Other attendees went on to discuss the role of the European Union in the shipping industry. Many of the speakers raised their concerns regarding the European Commission often failing to fully appreciate and support the maritime trade. It was unanimously agreed among the maritime experts that they should instead stand behind the important industry in order for it to be able to prosper with modernisation.
On the final day of the event, several conclusions were drawn with one overruling common factor: How will the new generation’s vision allow for further growth and prosperity within the maritime industry?
